Hey folks, Ryan here from Backroad Reviews.
If you’ve been around the site for a while, you know we don’t just review gear for the truck, the homestead, and the trail. We also pay attention to what goes into the animals that ride along with us. Today’s bag came along for a ride, and the dog in the back seat made the verdict pretty obvious.

The product is Happy Trout Pet Treats Trout Tidbits — freeze-dried raw steelhead trout fillet pieces for dogs and cats. One ingredient. No fillers. No mystery meal. Just fish that was grown, harvested, processed, and packaged in the USA, with the bag proudly stamped Made in the Hudson Valley.

What’s in the Bag

Trout Tidbits are small, irregular pieces of freeze-dried raw trout fillet. The bag is a 2 oz (57 g) stand-up pouch with a clear window so you can see the actual pieces before you buy. On the front you’ll see Happy Trout Pet Treats / Trout Tidbits, Freeze-Dried Raw Trout Fillet Treats for Dogs and Cats, “Satisfying Bites of Fillet,” “Happy Trout. Healthy Treats,” Made in the Hudson Valley, and the responsibly raised trout seals.

The pieces look like what they are: real fillet, not extruded kibble shapes. They’re light, dry, and break apart easily if you need a smaller training bit.

Amazon currently lists them around $14.99 for the 2 oz bag ($7.50/oz), with Prime shipping. That’s a premium price per ounce compared to grocery-store biscuits, but you’re paying for a single novel protein with a short, honest ingredient list.

Why We Looked at These

On the homestead and out on the backroads, we like treats that do more than one job: high value enough for training and “get in the truck” moments, simple enough for picky eaters and dogs with sensitive stomachs, something we don’t feel guilty feeding more than once, and sourced in a way that isn’t a black box.

Trout is a novel protein for a lot of dogs, which is useful if chicken or beef biscuits have started causing itch or loose stools. Freeze-dried fillet also packs omega-3s that support skin, coat, and general condition — the kind of thing you notice on a dog that rides in dusty trucks and swims in creeks.

The brand story matches that. Happy Trout Pet Treats grew out of Hudson Valley Fisheries, a land-based recirculating aquaculture operation in Hudson, New York. The pitch is straightforward: steelhead trout raised on land in a closed system, no hormones, no antibiotics, no ocean-borne mercury or microplastics, full traceability from hatch to pouch. Brittany, the founder, is a pet mom who works at the fishery and wanted treats she’d actually feed her own dogs.

That’s the kind of origin story we like hearing. What’s in this bag is still just trout fillet.

First Impression in the Truck

We opened the bag in the driver’s seat. Smell is clean fish, not sour or “pet aisle fishy.” Freeze-drying concentrates aroma, so one piece is plenty to get a dog’s attention.

The pieces are a good mid-size: big enough to feel like a real reward, small enough to use for short training reps without filling a dog up. They crumble if you want to make them even smaller for a cat or a tiny dog.

Then we turned the camera toward the back. That face says more than a spec sheet. No hesitation. Ears up, eyes locked, the whole “I know what that bag is” posture. That’s the test that matters on a backroad review. If the dog doesn’t care, the rest of the marketing is noise.

How We Used Them

  • High-value reward in the vehicle. Getting a dog settled, waiting, or coming back to the truck after a stop.
  • Short training bursts. Sit, wait, place, recall. One or two pieces per good rep.
  • Casual “good dog” moments around the homestead without dumping a handful of cheap biscuits.

Because they’re freeze-dried and single-ingredient, they don’t leave the greasy film some oily fish skins do. Hands stay reasonably clean, and they don’t smear all over the console. They are still fish, so store the bag sealed and don’t leave an open pouch in a hot cab all afternoon.

Cats are on the label too. If you’ve got barn cats or a house cat that ignores most treats, a crumbled piece of freeze-dried trout is usually a different conversation.

What We Like

  • One ingredient. Trout. That’s the whole list.
  • Novel protein. Useful for dogs that are tired of chicken-based training treats.
  • High value. Our tester dog treated these like a jackpot, not a polite nibble.
  • USA / Hudson Valley branding. Short supply story compared with mystery imported fish meal.
  • Works for dogs and cats. One bag covers the whole crew.
  • Good training size. Breaks down if you need smaller bits.
  • Omega-3 story is real. Fatty fish fillet is one of the better natural sources you can put in a treat pouch.

What to Know Before You Buy

Still a treat. Even a clean protein treat is extra calories.

Price per ounce is high. Two ounces goes fast if you treat like candy. Use them as the good treat, not the all-day biscuit.

Fish smell. Mild compared with some dried minnows, but it is trout.

Crumble factor. Fine for training; a little messy if a dog mouths a piece and drops half of it on the seat.

Small bag. Great for trying the brand. You’ll reorder if your dog is as sold as ours was.

Who These Are For

Buy Trout Tidbits if you want a single-ingredient training treat, a novel fish protein for sensitive or itchy dogs, something high-value for truck, trail, and homestead work, USA-made freeze-dried fillet instead of extruded “fish flavor,” or a treat you can also pinch for the cat.

Skip them if you need a 5-pound value bag of everyday biscuits, or if your pet refuses fish.

Backroad Verdict

Happy Trout Pet Treats Trout Tidbits are exactly what the bag claims: freeze-dried raw trout fillet, nothing else, in a size that works for real-life rewards. The dog in the back seat did not need a second sales pitch. That’s usually our signal.

They’re not cheap. They’re not a bulk kibble topper. They are a small-batch, high-value, honest-ingredient treat you can feel good handing over after a good sit, a good load-up, or a long day riding shotgun.

How We Turned Our Homestead Field into a Backyard Practice Course with This 6ft Golf Flagstick & Cup Set

How We Turned Our Homestead Field into a Backyard Practice Course with This 6ft Golf Flagstick & Cup Set

Hey, it’s Ryan with another Backroad Review.
We’ve got about five acres here, and after cutting down a couple of acres of field really short, we decided it was time to put in some simulated golf holes so we (and especially our son) could practice before heading out to the real range or course. Neighbor used to be a pro and instructor, so the family interest is high.

The product we used is the THIODOON 6ft Golf Flagstick with Detachable Cup and Flag (anti-rust glass fiber, 5-section design with connectors). You can find it here: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08DD9XK1G. Disclosure: This post contains affiliate links. What’s in the Box & Key Features

This set includes:

5-section lightweight fiberglass (glass fiber) poles that assemble into a full 6-foot flagstick
Strong connectors designed to stay together in the wind
A high-quality ABS putting cup with six drainage holes so water doesn’t pool
A bright red 420D nylon flag (approx. 19″ × 13″) with an O-ring/snap system that lets the flag spin freely instead of wrapping up and binding

The poles go together in a staggered red-and-white pattern (or all one color if you prefer). There’s a loop at the top and a simple system so the flag can rotate freely. The whole thing breaks down small enough to toss in a golf bag or store easily.

Our Install Experience (Watch the Video)

In the video we show the whole process on our place.

We used an old 4-inch hole saw (don’t ruin a good one—this will dull the teeth, especially in rocky or rooty ground) to cut a hole about 4 inches deep. The ground was dry, so it was a little dusty, but it worked fine. We leveled the cup with a rubber mallet so there’s no lip for the ball to catch.

Safety first: Always call 811 before you dig or drill anywhere. We already knew where our power and sewer lines were, but you never know.

Assembly is dead simple—just stack the sections and attach the flag. The rotating O-ring design is a nice touch so the flag doesn’t get tangled in the wind. We put a couple of holes in opposite corners of the field for good practice distance without losing too many balls. Then we mowed a rough fairway between them.

It took almost no time and now we have a little short course right on the homestead. Perfect for family practice, chipping, and putting.
(Watch the full install and review video that goes with this post for the complete walkthrough.)

What Amazon Customers Are Saying
The product currently sits around 4.2 out of 5 stars based on well over 1,000 ratings. Here’s the honest summary of real buyer feedback:
What people love:

Extremely easy and quick to put together and install
Excellent value for creating backyard or driving-range style practice holes
Poles and cup feel solid for the price
Bright, highly visible flag
Great for family fun, kids learning the game, or just practicing approach shots and short game at home
Drainage holes in the cup work as advertised

Common complaints:

The strings/ties that hold the flag to the pole are the weak point. Many reviewers report them breaking, rotting, or fraying after a few weeks to a couple of months of continuous outdoor exposure
Some flags start to fray or tear with prolonged wind and weather
A few note that plastic connectors can become brittle over time if left out year-round

The consensus is clear: the poles and cup hold up well, but treat the flag as a consumable. Bring the flag (or the whole stick) inside when you’re not using it, or replace the string with something stronger (paracord works great). Do that and most owners are very happy with the set.

Final Thoughts
For the money, this is an easy win if you want to practice at home without spending a fortune on a full artificial green. It’s not tournament-grade equipment, but it doesn’t need to be. We now have functional practice holes on the property, the family is more motivated to hit balls, and setup was straightforward.

If you’re looking to add a couple of backyard targets or a mini short-course feel to your yard, garden, or field, this THIODOON 6ft flagstick and cup set gets the job done.

FTX-1 Optima Jeep Setup – Portable HF Trial with Fence Post & Grounding Mats

FTX-1 Optima Jeep Setup – Portable HF Trial with Fence Post & Grounding Mats

Welcome back to Backroad Reviews, where we test real-world gear for off-road adventures, overlanding, and ham radio operations in the wild. Today we’re diving into a practical field trial from Backroad Radio featuring the Yaesu FTX-1 Optima in a Jeep-based mobile/portable setup. This isn’t a full-blown review but a hands-on test of a quick-deploy HF station using a fence post mast, grounding mats, and supporting accessories.

Backroad Reviews: FTX-1 Optima Jeep Setup – Portable HF Trial with Fence Post & Grounding Mats

The Setup

The core of this trial is a temporary stationary antenna configuration perfect for parking lot activations, trail stops, or POTA (Parks on the Air) sessions:

  • Radio: Yaesu FTX-1 Optima (compact all-mode HF/6m/2m/70cm transceiver)
  • Antenna: Yaesu ATAS-120A screwdrive mobile antenna mounted on a 10-ft fence post section
  • Grounding: GRA MAT50 HF Ground Enhancement Mat (magnetic, held by the zinc-coated steel post)
  • Mounting: Topsy Products brackets (fender/NMO style for Jeep JL/JLU/JT) and Hard Top Buddy for secure mounting
  • Accessories:
    • Comet CF-706 Duplexer
    • AR-300 HF RF Noise Suppression Choke
    • Topsy Products Communication Combo Mic Bracket
    • Small 6Ah lithium battery (re-purposed from a boat)
    • Camera bag for organization

The antenna is bolted to a fence post using a modified Hard Top Buddy mount (same one used for removing the Jeep hard top). Grounding mats attach magnetically to the post, providing an enhanced counterpoise for better HF performance.

Performance Impressions

According to the on-air test:

  • Reception: Excellent – hearing stations across the United States clearly.
  • Portability: The fence post + mats combo creates a surprisingly effective quick-deploy station without needing a full mast or extensive radial field.
  • Power: Running efficiently on a compact 6Ah lithium battery, making it very trail-friendly.
  • Noise Management: The AR-300 choke and Comet duplexer help keep things clean.
  • Vehicle Integration: Topsy Products mounts shine here – heavy-duty stainless steel construction that handles weight well. The mic bracket installs in minutes (15-30 min total) behind existing bolts for a clean, no-drill look.

Limitations noted: Not suitable for use while driving (obviously), but the setup pairs well with a more permanent mobile antenna like the Comet for on-the-move ops. Future plans include switching to a collapsible mast for POTA and optimizing wiring.

Pros

  • Quick Deploy: Fence post + magnetic mats = fast setup/teardown.
  • Effective Grounding: GRA MAT50 noticeably improves performance for a screwdriver antenna.
  • Jeep-Specific Mounts: Topsy Products gear is rugged, USA-made, and tailored for JL/JT models.
  • Compact Power: FTX-1 Optima + small battery keeps the whole rig lightweight.
  • Clean Install: Thoughtful routing through window seals avoids under-vehicle runs.

Cons / Areas for Improvement

  • Stationary-only for the tall mast setup.
  • Requires some custom bolt swapping and wiring tweaks for full integration.
  • Head unit mount still needed for optimal dashboard/roll cage placement.

Who Is This For?

Overlanders, Jeep enthusiasts, and ham operators who want reliable HF capability without a massive permanent install. Perfect for POTA, SOTA, or emergency comms on the trail. If you’re running a Yaesu FTX-1 or similar mobile rig, this grounding/mounting approach is worth testing.

Final Verdict

This trial shows that with smart accessories and a bit of creativity, you can achieve solid HF performance in a minimal, backroads-friendly package. The combination of the FTX-1 Optima, ATAS-120A, GRA mats, and Topsy mounts delivers impressive results for a quick fence-post station. Highly recommended for anyone building a versatile Jeep ham setup.

We Lit It Up in Minutes: The Devoko Fire Pit That Turned Our Backyard into a Fireside Escape (Plus the One Thing You Must Do First)

We Lit It Up in Minutes: The Devoko Fire Pit That Turned Our Backyard into a Fireside Escape (Plus the One Thing You Must Do First)

“A Solid, Attractive Fire Pit That’s Surprisingly Easy to Live With”

We’ve tested quite a few fire pits over the years on the Back Road Review channel, and the Devoko 32-inch Multiuse Fire Pit quickly became one of our favorite budget-friendly options for regular backyard use.

First Impressions & Build Quality

Right out of the box, this fire pit impressed us with its smooth, clean build and attractive decorative stone-look panels. The finish is much nicer than most entry-level fire pits in this price range — it has a refined, matte appearance that blends well with patio or backyard settings.

The square design with triangular legs gives it excellent stability while still being surprisingly easy to move around the yard when you want to reposition it. At roughly 20–25 lbs, it strikes a great balance between sturdiness and portability.

Setup & Features

Assembly is straightforward and took us under 20 minutes. The instructions are clear, and everything lined up nicely. It comes with two interchangeable tops:

  • A flat fire suppressor lid
  • A grill top with a small cooking grate

Other reviewers on Amazon (over 1,700 ratings averaging 4.5+ stars) frequently praise the same things: quick setup, solid construction, and the versatility of the dual tops.

In Action

We put it through a full fire test, and it delivered strong, lively flames with good airflow. The metal handled the heat well, and the square bowl gives you plenty of room for a proper fire. It’s perfect for s’mores, casual gatherings, or just relaxing on a cool evening.

Pro Tip from Our Experience (and echoed by many Amazon buyers): On your first burn, do it without a crowd around — especially kids. The factory paint burns off and releases fumes. After that initial seasoning, a coat of high-heat grill paint will help protect the finish and prevent rust for years to come.

Pros & Cons

Pros:

  • Smooth, high-quality finish with decorative details
  • Easy assembly
  • Lightweight enough to move easily around the yard
  • Versatile with two included tops
  • Great value for the price
  • Comes with a waterproof cover

Cons:

  • Metal is on the thinner side (typical for this price)
  • First burn requires caution due to paint off-gassing

Final Verdict

The Devoko Multiuse Fire Pit is a winner for anyone wanting an attractive, functional fire pit without spending hundreds of dollars. It offers a smooth build, nice finish, and practical portability that makes it easy to enjoy wherever you need it in the yard.

Whether you’re a weekend fire enthusiast or just want a reliable centerpiece for backyard hangs, this one delivers.
